Real Craft growers could get the green light from Health Canada.

Marijuana ( cannabis),  plant growing inside of the green house in a private garden. Private growers may soon have access to become small scale producers.

The government of Canada’s recent proposed regulations will open the door for small scale craft )micro) producers and potentially allowing low risk offenders to participate in the industry. The regulations also allow leniency on packaging and products. Canadian’s have until Jan 20th to offer opinions either via online survey or by providing a written submission. ” This proposed regulatory approach is informed by extensive consultations and research , it also meets our goal of protecting public health and safety, The Health Minister stated.

The proposals also open the door to increasing the types and quantities of products available for sale in an attempt to stamp out the black market.

“additional products could include , pre rolled joints , vapor cartridges manufactured with dried cannabis. Also oil capsules , sprays and oil intended for topical use would continue to be permitted.”

The concentrations would be:

: Pre rolled joints to contain no more than 1 gram

: Edible products are capped at 10 mg per product

:Cannabis oil subjected to a cap of 30 mg THC per ML as it exists today for the medical industry

:No limitations continue on dried products.

Many new licensing regimes will also be introduced such as new permits for cultivation , processing, sale , testing , research and importing/exporting.

The new licensing required for example cultivation , growers will then be able to apply for licenses that fit their business model. This includes anything from a large scale provider to a small scale producer specializing in something like clones/cuttings.

Producers will be able to introduce exclusive boutique products and then sell to larger producers and can participate in the market via provincial sellers as the province will be able to obtain products from any producer within their jurisdiction.

These proposed regulations would no longer require generic or plain packaging and give possible leeway to these areas , trusting that the producer meets some universal standards.

The Health Minister will have to issue the licence for cultivation or sale to anyone under the cannabis act which is currently working its way through parliament.

The minister would also have the ability to refuse security clearance to anyone with connections to organized crime or previous convictions linked to drug trafficking or violent crime.

Canadian’s have until January 1st to respond to a survey related to if  non violent offenders should be able to enter the market. Have your say by completing the link below.

2017 Marijuana Tax Proposal-Ottawa

Another new announcement from Ottawa that they have proposed the tax on the upcoming legalization of marijuana in Canada.

They have proposed a $1 per gram tax up to 10% whichever is greater, and on top of that, they are applying GST.

From the $1 half will go to the Provincial Government and the other half will be going to the Federal Government.

They say they are trying to find a balance to discourage the sale of cannabis while still keeping it competitive enough.

Nothing is finalized yet as there a several meeting happening in December regarding this topic.

So what will this mean for growers? We will keep you posted on progress.

The liberal government recently conducted a parliamentary committee meeting . The House of Commons health committee has been studying the new bill clause by clause since it was released, and recently heard from more than 100 witnesses.
Following that research, the committee put forward two major changes to the legislation earlier this week.   including a requirement that edibles and other concentrated forms of cannabis become legal within a year of Bill C-45 becoming law.

The original bill put forward also had a requirement that anyone who decided to grow marijuana plants at home had to limit their height to 100 centimetres and cap the number of plants they have to four. The updated bill removes any height requirements following concerns that a citizen could become a criminal simply by giving a plant to much nutrients or by going on vacations for even a week.

The police also strongly opposed this from a control stand point as it would be extremely tough to monitor height and they were not interested in adding meter sticks to their arsenal of gadgets. Over all , these amendments are a step in the right direction and over time we will see more amendments introduced that give Canadian cannabis consumers more rights.

POWDERY MILDEW What is it and how to get rid of it?

Powdery Mildew is an air born fungi disease. As the name implies , powdery mildew looks like powdery spots of white and can be found on any part of the plant and both indoor and outdoor.

There are many types of powdery mildew but they all look pretty much the same and it can attach in any stage of the plants development. Although powdery mildew can be scary looking , it does not usually cause the plant to die but photosynthesis can stop if the leaf’s are completely covered. It can also effect the taste look,  and smell of the finished product.

Is it a health hazard to smoke powdery mildew?

Consuming plants infected with powdery mildew can be harmful to your health , it can also  lead to respiratory infections and even cause the lung disease Aspergillosis. If a person with a compromised immune system inhales marijuana infected by powdery mildew , they can potentially get a lung infection that can be serious or even fatal.

How does a plant attract powdery mildew?

The most common causes of powdery mildew are:

-High humidity (above 55%)

-Poor air circulation

-wind (outdoor)

-plants being to close to one another

-touching a plant with PM then touching another plant .

How to treat and prevent powdery mildew?

There are many sprays on the market that claim to eliminate powdery mildew once it has been detected. However we could not find one that actually  worked.

Some better options would be:

SERINADE (treatment)

A 100% organic beneficial bacteria helps fight bacteria with bacteria. This liquid smells horrible but it works. We would recommend to dilute with water as per the bottles instructions and spray directly on the effected area.

Surfer Burners (treatment) – Many old school growers use sulfur burners to treat powdery mildew , this method works but can be expensive and will most likely leave a faint  sulfer taste in the finished product.

-Sulfer Burner shown on the left.

C02 (Preventative) By adding 750 PPM of C02 to the grow space then you will be providing  an environment where powdery mildew cannot thrive and you will most likely never see it again. Many growers that we spoke to use C02 just for this purpose and receive the other benefits along with it.

CONCLUSION- To treat powdery mildew effectively , we would recommend to either u a sulfur burner or to mix serenade with the manufactures recommend amount of water.

To prevent powdery mildew , we strongly recommend good air flow and having at least 750 PPM of C02 in the grow room at all times and you should never see it again.

How to organically prevent and eliminate spider mites. What works and what does not.

Spider mites are part of the Acari family tetranchidae , which includes just about 1200 species. They thrive in a hot , dry conditions and usually live on the undersides of the leaf or at least in the beginning of an infestation but they will slowly take over the top sides before starting to web .

The most common ways these bugs get into your gardens are from:

-A dirty grow room
-Bringing them in on your clothes
-Outside air (intake)
-Time of year can play a factor

And about 50% of growers will have mites at some point in their growing cycle.

The most popular methods to prevent or eliminate spider mites are:

1) Neem oil (preventative)

Neem oil is a vegetable based product that is derived from the Neem tree. Although banned by Health Canada for LP’S , it’s texture and smell has been proven to deter spider mites from ever entering the plants. Neem oil would be ineffective once spots have been identified or while in flower but the recipe as a preventative measure would be.

6 ML per L of luke warm water and do not apply more then every 10 days or it will build up over time and cause damage. Some growers add a drop of soap to help it mix better with water.

2) Insects or predators which includes:
Lady bug’s , Lady bug’s are only effective at eating thrips and do not eat the amount of spider mites required to exterminate the problem. A more effective predator would be:

Phytoseiulus persimilis is a mite of its own and is red in colour and have been produced commercially for years, (Phytoseiulus persimilis) are an effective biological control for use against the two spotted spider mite. These natural enemies do not bite people, feed on other insects or injure plants. Once released, they will immediately begin searching for food on the underside of leaves. These predators should take control of a mild infestation in two to three weeks. On heavier infestations a second release may be required. These mites are extremely aggressive in terms of how many spider mites they consume on a daily basis but the amount required for the job can add up to quite the bill. The recommended recipe would be 10x the amount of Phytoseiulus to the spider mites or one container for a 10×10 area for a complete extermination of spider mites.

C02 intoxication (treatment) – We have heard of many growers talking about how subjecting your room or individual plants to a PPM level of 2000+ can literally choke any life form in the room. However this method would simply not work based upon the fact that Spider mites breath through pours in their skin rather then having lungs.

SOAP- Even though this is not an organic method we decided to through it in anyway. Hundreds of testimonials have been created claiming that soap could be an effective treatment for spider mites. Soap may somewhat slow the process but it is definitely not an effective method as the mites will continue to multiply after the soap applications have been ceased.

Out of all of the options above , we would recommend to use Neem oil to quarantine any new plants or start applying the Neem every 10 days after the 3rd set of leafs have developed . This will greatly reduce your chances of ever getting mites and if you do still end up getting mites for what ever reason then we would recommend to purchase some Phytoseiulus persimillis to exterminate them for good.

Marijuana Growing

Will 4 plants be enough for Canadian cannabis consumers come July 2018?

The Canadian government has announced that the cannabis act which will be introduced in July 2018 will include home cultivation of up to 4 plants per household , but what if you have more then one consumer in the home or if you are not the most experienced grower?   The new act actually produces more laws related to marijuana then we as Canadian's have ever seen and will be more strict then anywhere in North America that has allowed recreational use of cannabis except for Washington state where it is still illegal. Similar to US states , the act also leaves the door open for local municipalities to restrict these provisions even further. The  act proposes these 4 plants are only allowed to be 1 meter tall max unlike in Oregon where people grow massive plants to get around the 4 plant limit with no restrictions. The Cannabis act includes punishments of up to 14 years for an individual convicted on an indictable offence and a fine of up to $5.000 dollars , or a fine of up to $5,000 or prison for a term of 6 months on a summary conviction which seems pretty steep for a plant that never hurt anyone. Below we have mapped out a quick comparison to other states that have legalized recreational marijuana and how many plants they allow. Washington- ILLEGAL Colorado-Up to six plants (no more then three mature) per person or 12 max per household. Alaska-Up to 4 plants per household (no size limit) California- (not yet highlighted in lime green as the laws have changed so recently)  6 plant in any state or size plus entire harvest - country can restrict outdoor but not indoor cultivation Compared to these other 5 jurisdictions ( California being the most recent to legalize) the proposed cannabis act would seem to be some of the toughest regulations in North America. Especially considering 92% of Canadian's that completed the cannabis act online survey agree to home cultivation. The average daily consumption rate of a frequent cannabis user is about 2 grams a day which would require 730 grams annually and not to mention if you have more then one daily  consumer in the household . With the 4 plant limit and the height restrictions it would be extremely difficult to adequately supply yourself all year long leaving you to depend on an alternate source most likely controlled by the government. We talked to some growers under the the ACMPR programs and some regular marijuana consumers who are waiting for legalization and the general opinion was that the benefits of having the freedom to cultivate or potentially cultivate as per a prescription seems to outweigh any potential benefit from this proposed legislation. If someone is looking at taking marijuana growing seriously then they might want to think about signing up with the ACMPR program to avoid unintentionally being turned into a criminal. On the other hand , this program could benefit your occasional user such as your parents or grandparents or a hobbyist gardener who has always been interested in the plants botany.

Ontario Marijuana Legalization Laws Update

Ontario is the first province to bring forth a plan for the upcoming legalization next year. There have been many mixed reviews so far, but at least we are making progress. So let’s review the highlights.

The proposed minimum age will be 19
The proposed possession limits are 30g for adults and 5 for youths
Basically, only allowed to consume in our own homes. Will not be allowed in public
It will be illegal to operate a dispensary
Planned 150 stores in Ontario.

As we continue to get closer to full legalization, I’m sure there are going to be many rule changes along the way. I hope we can find the right solutions for growers and consumers. It’s a medicine that many people can benefit from but we need the right system in place for all.
